Dragon Fruit
Dragon fruit is a somewhat exotic type of fruit, distinguished by its attractive pink color, sweet delicious taste, and oval shape. It is also known as pitaya, queen of the night, and lady of the moon. With its unique appearance, dragon fruit belongs to the cactus family. Its origins trace back to Mexico, parts of Central and South America, as well as East Asia, Indonesia (particularly Java), Vietnam, and other countries with hot climates suitable for its growth.
Dragon fruit is highly nutritious, rich in vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, thiamine, niacin, Vitamin B12, dietary fiber, carbohydrates, sugars, calories, Vitamin B complex, calcium, phosphorus, carotene, and numerous antioxidants.
Cultivating Dragon Fruit
Dragon fruit is cultivated by obtaining its seeds, which are the black seeds found in its white pulp. These seeds are cleaned of any residue, dried, and then planted in fertile sandy soil. The planting site should be exposed to sunlight. It can also be grown in pots or clay containers for decorative purposes. Dragon fruit requires minimal watering, similar to other types of cacti.
Seedlings sprout approximately 10–14 days after planting. The plant becomes productive and capable of fruiting once it weighs around five kilograms, at which point it can flower and produce fruits. The flowers bloom at night, relying on nocturnal insects for pollination and fertilization.
It is worth noting that dragon fruit plants can tolerate temperatures up to 40°C and mild frost, but heavy frost can cause death and breakage. Overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot. Remarkably, dragon fruit cultivation is highly successful in the Gulf countries.
