How to Grow Arugula
Preparation for Planting
Growing arugula requires attention to the following points:
- Soil Preparation:
- Add approximately 10-15 cm of organic material and mix it into the soil at a depth of about 15-20 cm.
- Arugula can grow in soils with varying pH levels.
- Planting in Containers:
- Use a soilless potting mix for planting arugula in containers.
- Maintain moisture in the potting mix by placing the container in a dish filled with water.
Planting Arugula
There are two main methods for planting arugula:
- Planting Seeds:
- Start planting seeds two to three weeks before the last frost.
- Sow the seeds in the soil at a depth of approximately 0.64 cm.
- Water gently to avoid washing away the seeds from their place.
- Planting Stems:
- Obtain stem cuttings from store-bought arugula.
- Root the stems by placing them in moist soil.
Harvesting Arugula
- It is generally best to begin harvesting arugula about three weeks after it sprouts and continue throughout the year.
- Harvesting is most recommended during the cooler months before the plants begin to flower, as the leaves have the best flavor during this period.
- When the plants flower, the leaves may lose their taste.
To harvest arugula:
- Cut the upper parts of the plants to about 10 cm in length.
- This pruning method stimulates the plants to produce more and grow thicker.
Storing Harvested Arugula
- Wash the harvested arugula leaves thoroughly.
- Place them in a plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator.
- When stored this way, the leaves can last for about a week.
