Avocado is a plant native to tropical America, belonging to the Lauraceae family. It has small green leaves and flowers, with pear-shaped green fruits measuring approximately 7 to 20 centimeters in length and containing a seed in the center. An avocado tree typically produces around 120 fruits annually, serving as a significant food source for growers. The avocado tree is a long-lived evergreen, reaching heights of up to 18 meters. It is also economically valuable and is widely cultivated in the Americas, Europe, and Australia.

Ideal Environment for Growing Avocado

Avocado trees thrive in frost-free environments, tolerating mild winds but not strong ones, as these hinder moisture retention and pollination. They are commonly grown in tropical and subtropical regions, blooming in spring. While they can endure high temperatures, they require ample water.

For optimal pollination and fruit yield, planting large numbers of avocado trees is advisable. Introducing beehives among the trees encourages pollination. Planting involves digging at least 70 cm deep and enriching the soil with organic fertilizer. The soil is tilled shallowly to eliminate weeds and aerate it, followed by gentle watering to keep the seeds about 45 cm from the soil’s surface.

Young trees require weekly watering, adjusted to the regional climate. Harvesting is quicker during warmer months. Fruits are picked before fully ripening, with stems left intact to prevent rot during storage. It is advisable to use scissors for harvesting.


Diseases and Pests

Avocado trees may suffer significant losses from viral diseases like root rot or scab and may be affected by pests such as fruit flies and scale insects.


Steps to Grow Avocado

  1. Carefully remove the seed from the fruit and clean it.
  2. Insert toothpicks into the seed.
  3. Place the seed in a small cup so that half of it is submerged in water.
  4. Change the water daily or every other day. Once the submerged part splits, remove the toothpicks.
  5. Prepare a pot with suitable soil and plant the seed with the split part upward and the other half buried in the soil.
  6. Water gently without over-saturating.

Avocado Salad

  • Ingredients:
    • 2 avocados
    • 3 medium-sized tomatoes
    • 8 lettuce leaves
    • 6 mushrooms
    • 2 spring onions
    • Dressing: 2 tbsp cream, salt, pepper, ¼ cup lemon juice, 2 tbsp olive oil.
  • Preparation:
    1. Mix lemon juice, olive oil, cream, and salt.
    2. Arrange vegetables on a serving plate.
    3. Pour the dressing over the vegetables, mix lightly, and serve.

Avocado Smoothie

  • Ingredients:
    • 1½ cups warm milk
    • 1 tbsp honey
    • 1 avocado
    • Topping: 1 tsp honey and 1 tsp ground almonds.
  • Preparation:
    1. Blend milk, avocado, and honey.
    2. Pour into glasses and garnish with honey and almonds.

Avocado and Mango Juice

  • Ingredients:
    • 2 mangoes
    • 3 medium avocados
    • 1 banana
    • 2 tbsp honey
    • 2 cups fresh milk
    • Peeled and soaked almonds
    • Kiwi slices
  • Preparation:
    1. Peel and slice the avocado, removing the seed.
    2. Blend banana with half a cup of milk until smooth.
    3. Mash mango in another bowl and mix with the remaining milk.
    4. Layer the avocado mixture in glasses, add mango puree, and top with almonds, kiwi slices, and honey. Serve chilled.
