Best Time to Plant Lettuce
Lettuce is best grown in the spring or fall seasons, as it thrives in cool, moist conditions. Lettuce seeds grow optimally at a temperature of around 21°C, meaning they can be sown in early spring in the garden.
Planting Conditions
Lettuce should be planted in well-drained soil that remains moist and fertile. Since lettuce grows better in slightly acidic soil, fertilizer can be added if necessary. Additionally, lettuce thrives in sheltered areas with limited exposure to direct sunlight.
How to Plant Lettuce
Lettuce can be grown in plastic containers or garden bags. The containers do not need to be deep but should have a wide surface area. Avoid using clay pots as they can dry out the soil during summer. Ensure the pots have proper drainage holes. Follow these steps to plant lettuce:
- Add compost and water to a planting tray.
- Take a handful of seeds and scatter them across the soil.
- Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and some compost.
- Spray water over the seeds using a watering can.
- Place the planting tray in a sheltered, sunny spot, such as a garden or patio.
Lettuce seeds typically germinate within two weeks. Once the seedlings have grown four leaves and reached a height of 50.8–76.2 millimeters, they can be transplanted into containers.
Planting Lettuce in Pots
- Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
- Fill the pot with compost and water.
- Create small holes in the soil for the seedlings.
- Leave enough space between plants, approximately 20.32 centimeters apart.
- Surround the plants with soil to secure them in place.
- Water the plants gently.
- Add mulch to the soil to reduce weed growth and help retain moisture.
