Onion Planting Guide
Best Time to Plant Onions
The ideal time to plant onions is from mid-March to mid-April. It is worth noting that onions grow better when planted directly in the soil rather than in containers or raised beds. Additionally, onions do not thrive in acidic soil with a pH level below 6.5【1】【2】.
Planting Onions
Onions should be gently planted at a depth of 1.27 cm in soft soil, ensuring that only a small part of the bulb is visible above the surface. Leave a space of 10 cm between each onion bulb and 30 cm between rows【1】.
Caring for Onions
- Fertilization and Moisture: Fertilize the onions to maintain soil moisture and ensure they receive adequate sunlight.
- Watering: Water the onions during dry weather but stop watering once the bulbs start to appear【1】.
Harvesting Onions
Harvesting begins when the onion leaves turn yellow and start falling over. If the onions were planted in spring, the harvest period falls between late summer and early autumn.
- Harvesting Process: Pull out the bulbs before all the leaves die off.
- Curing: Allow the bulbs to air out and sun-dry for about two weeks to complete the ripening process.
- Storage: Store the onions in a cool, dry place until ready for use【2】.
Planting Onions in Containers
The method of planting onions in containers is similar to planting them in the ground. Onions require sunlight, fertilizer, good soil, and proper drainage. The main difference lies in choosing the right container:
- Opt for a container several meters wide and at least 25.4 cm deep.
- Alternatively, onions can be grown in a plastic tub with drainage holes at the bottom to ensure adequate water drainage【3】.
